Deposit Insurance Fund assessment rates stay unchanged
On March 14 the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) decided to keep the assessment rates for the Deposit Insurance Fund unchanged for 2008. The existing rate schedule is 5 to 43 basis points, with the most highly-rated institutions charged a rate of 5 to 7 basis points.
Following the decision, the American Bankers Association (ABA) expressed its disappointment.
“Keeping funds in the bank to support lending in their communities is increasingly important in today’s economy and can be prudently done given the growing strength of the insurance fund,” said ABA President and CEO Ed Yingling.
The recent decision is consistent with the FDIC’s objective to increase the reserve ratio to the Designated Reserve Ratio of 1.25 percent before the end of 2009.
FDIC Chairman Sheila Bair said the decision was based on “significant uncertainties” involving the agency’s projections and the current challenges facing the banking industry.
The FDIC projects the 1.25 percent designated reserve ratio will be achieved at the end of 2008 or early in 2009. As the fund reaches the 1.25 percent target, Bair said she expects the Board to consider reducing rates to a maintenance level.
