Smokefree Air Act now effective in Iowa as of July 1
Smoking is now prohibited in all enclosed public places and workplaces and some outdoor areas under Iowa’s Smokefree Air Act (HF 2212), which went into effect July 1. Because bank premises are places of employment, smoking is now prohibited in all enclosed areas within the bank and vehicles owned, leased or provided by the employer.
Smoking is allowed in outdoor areas that are not otherwise required to be smoke free by the Act. For places of employment, smoking is allowed in most outdoor areas of employment. However, at its discretion, the employer may designate certain outdoor areas as smoke-free.
“No smoking” signs must be posted at every entrance to a place of employment where smoking it not allowed, and at every entrance to outdoor areas where smoking is not allowed. Signs must also be posted in public vehicles owned, leased or provided by an employer.
Signs must include three statements:
- The international “no smoking” • symbol OR the words “No Smoking,”
- The Smokefree Air Act Web site: www.iowasmokefreeair.gov, and
- The Smokefree Air Act Helpline: 1.888.944.2247.
Signs are required to be at least 24 square inches in size and the type must be in a legible font. Model signage is available at www.iowasmokefreeair.gov.
Bankers Advertising Company is one entity making signs. To order contact Tracy Robinson by phone at 319.354.1020, ext. 116 or e-mail trobinson@bankersadvertising.com.
For more information, visit www.iowasmokefreeair.gov or contact the Iowa Department of Public Health at 515.281.7689. The July issue of the Iowa Bankers Association’s The Disclosure magazine will also include additional discussion of the Act.

Statewide business organization interviews Iowa candidates

Members of Economic Progress for Iowa’s Citizens (EPIC), a non-partisan business organization, discussed business issues with several state candidates in open seat races last week. Three days of interviews with participating candidates gave EPIC members a chance to become acquainted with the candidates and discuss issues important to business and industry.
EPIC members include all major business organizations in the state, including the Iowa Bankers Association (IBA), as well as several major employers. IBA Government Relations staff Sharon Presnall and Bob Hartwig were members of the audience who interviewed candidates. As a candidate for Iowa Senate in District 18, Iowa banker Joe Childers (pictured above) of U.S. Bank, N.A. in Cedar Rapids participated in the interviews.
