Ford Brings Team-First Approach to Banking

Prior to starting her career in banking, Tara Ford worked on a pilot computer-based inventory system for a warehouse distribution center. In that position, she had to work with people in several different roles. Through that experience, she learned the value of teamwork and listening to each person when trying to solve a problem.

Today, Ford, who graduated from Buena Vista University and also holds an Accredited ACH Professional (AAP) designation, is vice president of operations at Farmers Savings Bank in Milford.

How did you get into banking as a career?
After college, I had the opportunity to go on a service trip with one of the officers of the bank who I attended church with. I mentioned looking for an opportunity to use my degree. When the bank had an opening, he encouraged me to apply.

Prior to your current role, what was the most unusual or interesting job you’ve ever had, and what lesson did it teach you that you still use today?
The most interesting job I had prior to banking was working on a pilot computer-based inventory system for a warehouse distribution center. Working with dock workers in shipping and receiving, order fillers, forklift drivers and supervisors taught me the value in listening to each team member’s voice to better problem solve.

What is your best elevator pitch for why banking is a great career?
In community banking you have the unique opportunity to help your community and neighbors grow and thrive. Developing relationships with your customers can be the most fulfilling part of your career.

How does getting involved with the Iowa Bankers Association help you and your bank?
The IBA not only offers up to date training and extensive experience but also advocates on behalf of the hundreds of community financial institutions in Iowa.

When you’re not at work, what do you like to do most?
Spending time with family is most important to me. Now that my two daughters are mostly grown and flown, I am enjoying traveling more and exploring new destinations.

What is a quote or guiding principle you live by?
“You must be the change you wish to see in the world”

— Mahatma Ghandi
