Survey: Banks Weighing Options for Reopening Lobbies

The IBA conducted a survey last week to gauge how banks are planning to reopen lobbies as Gov. Kim Reynolds begins the process of a gradual reopening of the economy. A majority remain undecided as 64.3% said they are still considering their options. Once banks do fully reopen, more than half (53.5%) said they plan to open all branches at once. About 34% said they will vary branch openings based on market factors, such as the incident rate of COVID-19 diagnoses. Once they reopen, 57.4% said they will open with regular hours.

Banks were mixed on how they plan to bring employees who have been teleworking back into the office. While 30.2% said employees are already working in bank offices, 22.5% said they will return in phases, 17% said they will allow employees to voluntarily work with their managers to decide the best date, and 13% said they will set a specific date for all telework employees to return to the office. Banks were also asked when they will begin transitioning telework employees back into the office, and 24.8% said they have already begun, while 21.7% said they will begin within the next 30 days. A little more than 34% said they are undecided.

On the question of whether the bank will require wellness checks/questionnaires before allowing employees to return to work, 36.4% indicated they would not be required. Only 16.3% said they will be required once before employees return to the office, while 15.5% said they will be required daily. Banks were also asked what safety measures they would implement upon reopening. Nearly all banks that responded (98.5%) said they would provide hand sanitizer to both customers and staff. Most banks (88.4%) also said they would provide teller shields or sneeze guards. More than 60% said they would also provide gloves and install floor decals to encourage social distancing. Only 35.7% said they would require face masks of either customers or staff while 25.6% said they would require temperature screenings of either customers or staff.
