Working in Restaurant Provides Valuable Career Lesson for Kern

While growing up in Clear Lake, Aimee Kern spent many years working in her family’s restaurant. It was there she learned the benefits of creating a positive experience for customers. “If you take care of people and make them feel welcome, they will not forget it,” she said.

Today, Kern, who has an associate’s degree from North Iowa Area Community College, a bachelor’s degree from Drake University and an MBA from Ashford University, is vice president of human resources at Clear Lake Bank & Trust. She is also a member of the IBA’s 2020 Leaders in Advocacy class.

How did you get into banking as a career?
I grew up in Clear Lake and returned to the area as an adult. I was working in the health care industry in human resources and had the opportunity to join Clear Lake Bank & Trust. I have loved learning about the banking industry and feel that working in community banking is a perfect match for me.

Prior to your current role, what was the most unusual or interesting job you’ve ever had, and what lesson did it teach you that you still use today?
While it was not unusual, I spent many years working in my family’s restaurant business. One of the biggest lessons gained from that experience is: if you take care of people and make them feel welcome, they will not forget it.

What is your best elevator pitch for why banking is a great career?
Banks are the cornerstone of our communities. Each and every role in a community bank offers opportunities to connect with people, assist them with their financial well-being and ultimately strengthen our communities. Through my role at CLB&T, I have been given tremendous opportunities to give back to my community which feel great to be a part of!

How does getting involved with the Iowa Bankers Association help you and your bank?
Through my connections with various individuals and services at the IBA, I have been able to grow my knowledge of the banking industry and connect with resources to support me in my work. In my role in HR, I have also been able to help employees connect to IBA resources that aid them in career growth and development, and connect them to critical regulatory compliance support. The IBA’s advocacy efforts have also been tremendously helpful to all Iowa community banks bringing awareness to and action on issues affecting us all.

When you’re not at work, what do you like to do most?
I enjoy time with family, pets, traveling, cooking, biking, and being out on and around beautiful Clear Lake!

What is a quote or guiding principle you live by?
A quote from Winston Churchill always sticks with me is: “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.”
