Passion for Service Leads Morrissey to Banking Career

Before Dena Morrissey took on a part-time banking job in high school, she worked in the meat department at her local grocery store. It was a role that instilled in her a passion for customer service despite having to wrap the “grossest meat” — cow tongue, pig’s feet, beef heart and chicken hindquarters. When she started working on her degree in business administration and financial management at the American Institute of Business, she continued to work at a bank and turned it into a career.

Today, Morrissey is vice president, customer service manager at Iowa State Bank in Fairfield. “Banking is a great way to make a difference in your community,” Morrissey said. “Whether you are a loan officer or a teller or someone in between, you have the opportunity to help someone.”

How did you get into banking as a career?
My mom worked at Iowa State Bank before I was born, which led me to work here in high school. I worked as a teller for Hawkeye Bank while in college, then as a personal banker at Firstar Bank in Ames while my husband finished school. We moved back to our hometown and there was a bookkeeping position open. The rest is history.

Prior to your current role, what was the most unusual or interesting job you’ve ever had, and what lesson did it teach you that you still use today?
I worked in the Hy-Vee meat department in high school. All the old men thought it was funny to make me wrap the grossest meat: cow tongue, pig’s feet, beef heart. Chicken hindquarters were the worst! I knew this was not what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. I did realize I liked helping people — “smile in every aisle.” No one wants an unhappy customer, but I get such satisfaction turning a frown upside-down.

What is your best elevator pitch for why banking is a great career?
Banking is a great way to make a difference in your community. Whether you are a loan officer or a teller or someone in between, you have the opportunity to help someone.

How does getting involved with the Iowa Bankers Association help you and your bank?
The IBA is a great resource for banks. There are countless webinars and before COVID, in-person training. Most recently, I have attended Consumer Credit School and have completed my first year of Iowa School of Banking.

When you’re not at work, what do you like to do most?
My husband and I are empty nesters, so what did we do? We bought two puppies: a Vizsla and a Maltipoo. Besides walking the dogs, I like to attend ISU football games (and see the kids), visit with friends and read.

What is a quote or guiding principle you live by?
Eat an apple, read a book and go for a walk.
