Marso Finds Calling in HR, Career in Banking

Brianna Marso has spent her career in the human resources field. She earned her degree in human resources management and health services administration at Mount Mercy University. After graduating, she found a job in HR for a manufacturing company. Then an HR position opened up at a bank in her local community, and she jumped at the opportunity. “There is no better way to be involved in your community than working within the foundation that supports your community, customers and co-workers,” she said.

Today, Marso is a human resources officer at Iowa State Bank in Algona, where she has been for the last five years.

How did you get into banking as a career?
Initially, after graduating college I began my HR career in manufacturing in an organization outside of my local community. When an HR position became available at Iowa State Bank, I felt it was a great opportunity to transition into working in my local community.

Prior to your current role, what was the most unusual or interesting job you’ve ever had, and what lesson did it teach you that you still use today?
Throughout high school, I worked as a respite provider for a young child with Down syndrome. Although challenging at times, as a young adult it taught me patience and the value of looking at a situation through the eyes of others.

What is your best elevator pitch for why banking is a great career?
Community banks are the foundation of each community. There is no better way to be involved in your community than working within the foundation that supports your community, customers and co-workers.

How does getting involved with the Iowa Bankers Association help you and your bank?
With very little knowledge of banking in my initial career, the Iowa Bankers Association’s HR peer group has been a tremendous source of knowledge for me throughout my five years in banking. The network of peers this group creates has been a great resource to ask questions, gather ideas and share knowledge with other professionals in my field, which can be difficult to find elsewhere.

When you’re not at work, what do you like to do most?
I enjoy spending my time outdoors with family and friends.

What is a quote or guiding principle you live by?
“All things are possible if you believe.”
