Business Class Opens Weaver’s Eyes to Banking

In Sheila Weaver’s more than 33-year career, she has worked in only one industry — banking. She found her way there through a high school business class that gave students the opportunity to gain work experience at a local business. A short time later, a teller position opened up at the bank and she jumped at it.

From there, Weaver was promoted to bookkeeper then data processing officer. Today, she is the operations /IT/compliance officer at Security State Bank in Sutherland. “A career in banking provides you with the ability to help others, gain friendships, set standards and a reputation for your bank, learn new technologies, and the opportunity to advance your career from starting as a teller to becoming a bank officer,” she said.

How did you get into banking as a career?
I had a business class in high school that gave students the opportunity to gain work experience at a local business. I took the option of working at our local bank my senior year, doing what jobs they gave us to do. It was a career choice I had not considered until that point. The following Christmas break, they were looking for part-time help while they had a teller on maternity leave and asked me if I would be interested. I was. Then the next spring, they had an opening at the bank and they offered me a teller job, if I wanted it. It was exactly what I was looking for. So I took it. The rest is history, as they say, and I have been here ever since some 33-plus years later.

Prior to your current role, what was the most unusual or interesting job you’ve ever had, and what lesson did it teach you that you still use today?
Since this is the only job I have ever held in my lifetime, prior to being our operations/IT/compliance officer, I began my career here at the bank as a teller, then moved to being a bookkeeper and then to the data processing officer position. After doing this for several years, I was then provided with my own office and a new position of operations officer as well as handling IT and compliance. This career has taught me how to build relationships with customers, our community and my co-workers as well as learn to prioritize what projects need to be tackled first. Overall, this career has helped teach me to keep my emotions in check and treat others with respect as I would expect to be treated.

What is your best elevator pitch for why banking is a great career?
Banking has so many avenues that come with it. Everyone usually thinks that it is all about money, numbers and being able to balance accounts. But, it is so much more. A career in banking provides you with the ability to help others, gain friendships, set standards and a reputation for your bank, learn new technologies, and the opportunity to advance your career from starting as a teller to becoming a bank officer.

How does getting involved with the Iowa Bankers Association help you and your bank?
The Iowa Bankers Association is absolutely the best state association in the 50 states. Maybe it is because the IBA takes care of its state banks by providing support in any way they can. They are the best resource for compliance, stand up for us in the regulatory battlefield, give us training opportunities, conduct our bank’s ACH and BSA audits, set up peer groups that I am able to join and participate in and also deliver publications to help give us the latest news in the industry. I have made fantastic friendships and connections with many of the staff at the IBA that has helped me to grow as an officer of our bank.

When you’re not at work, what do you like to do most?
I love to spend time with my husband, our two sons and my daughter-in-law. We are a farming family, so there are many ways to be able to spend time with them around the farm. I enjoy being outside running, riding my bicycle, cooking for my family and being involved in our church activities.

What is a quote or guiding principle you live by?
Jeremiah 24:15 — “But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”
