Dingeman: Banking Is a ‘Very Fulfilling’ Career

While Nicole Dingeman has worked in the banking industry since graduating from Central College, she — like many in the banking industry — got direct experience with customer service before she became a banker. For Dingeman, that meant waiting tables at a bar and grill. She says the experience working with restaurant customers translated well to her banking role as she works, not only with customers but other staff members as well.

Today, Dingeman is assistant vice president — retail manager and residential real estate manager at Leighton State Bank in Pella. “Helping people purchase their first home or get into the right position financially to purchase their first home is very fulfilling,” she said.

How did you get into banking as a career?
I took a teller position a few years after college at Leighton State Bank and have been here since. I have shifted around a few times learning different aspects of the banking industry.

Prior to your current role, what was the most unusual or interesting job you’ve ever had, and what lesson did it teach you that you still use today?
Well, since I’ve been at Leighton State Bank shortly after I graduated from Central, the other job I head in between was working as a waitress at a bar and grill. The most important thing I learned while waiting tables is patience and great customer service. When your income relies on a happy customer, you learn pretty quick that the importance of customer service. I have used and developed those tools in in my current role today when working with staff and customers.

What is your best elevator pitch for why banking is a great career?
It’s a great career to get into to help people financially. Helping people purchase their first home or get into the right position financially to purchase their first home is very fulfilling. There are so many different avenues/roles that you can go down in when getting into banking.

How does getting involved with the Iowa Bankers Association help you and your bank?
The IBA has been a huge resource for me throughout the years as I’ve switched roles and needed additional guidance, clarification or education.

When you’re not at work, what do you like to do most?
I enjoy spending time outdoors with my three boys and husband. We enjoy hiking and bike riding on the trails around the lake. We recently purchased a camper, so I’m hoping we will get some good use out of that next year.

What is a quote or guiding principle you live by?
Live each day like it’s your last. Life is too short.
