Bronner Finds Banking Career at Opportune Time

An old adage says, “When one door closes, another opens.” Lori Bronner learned this firsthand when she and her husband were applying for a home loan. During the application process, she revealed that her current position was soon ending. The lender encouraged her to apply to the bank. “I was hired shortly after and have been at CUSB Bank ever since,” she said.

Today, Bronner is senior vice president and human resources director at CUSB Bank in Cresco. “Banking has a lot to offer for many different skills and talents,” she said.

How did you get into banking as a career?
Shortly after getting married, my husband and I came to CUSB Bank for a home loan. When asked for income, I stated that my current position was coming to an end due to program cuts and wouldn’t have any to include. It was mentioned to me to submit my resume to the bank. I was hired shortly after and have been at CUSB Bank ever since. I started in what was known then as the bookkeeping department and worked as a teller, loan processer, new accounts manager, retail office manager and, currently, the human resources director. I am also an active member of the executive management team and board secretary.

Prior to your current role, what was the most unusual or interesting job you’ve ever had, and what lesson did it teach you that you still use today?
I worked at Hormel Foods in the legal department after graduating from business school. This was my first “real” job and was working for the head lawyer. It was an experience in many ways but most of all perseverance and determination in getting my work done efficiently and accurately.

What is your best elevator pitch for why banking is a great career?
There are so many different career paths one can take in working for a bank. Most common roles that are asked for include teller, new accounts and loan officer. There are so many career paths that are not so common such as marketing and graphic design, accounting, compliance and auditing, risk management/credit analyst, operations, information technology and human services; customer facing or non-customer facing roles. Banking has a lot to offer for many different skills and talents.

How does getting involved with the Iowa Bankers Association help you and your bank?
Iowa Bankers Association is a go-to resource for schools and trainings. They offer a variety of topics presented in a variety of formats. One of my favorites is the IBA Leadership Institute. This program offers so much in the way of developing a community leader as well as a way to network with fellow bankers. Networking is a plus in working with Iowa Bankers. The conferences offered are informative and another great way to meet peers. The IBA Peer Groups are also a way to network as well as a place to find support and ask questions when in a specific role. IBA provides support and development in many ways.

When you’re not at work, what do you like to do most?
Spending time with family; especially my grandkids.

What is a quote or guiding principle you live by?
Be the change you want to see.
