IBA offers tools to communicate with elected officials

As the 2011 Legislative Session approaches, the Iowa Bankers Association (IBA) offers a variety of tools for bankers to engage in the legislative process.  The IBA will soon release the 2011-2012 State Legislative Directory. Each bank CEO can expect to receive their free copy in the mail in January to coincide with the start of the state legislative session.  Additional copies can be purchased at $10 per book. The Directory contains photographs and biographies of Iowa’s state senators and representatives as well as the federal delegation.  It also lists contact information, including phone numbers, e-mail addresses and home addresses.

“With so many new faces in the Iowa Legislature, the Legislative Directory is a handy tool to help IBA members familiarize themselves with their state legislators,” IBA lobbyist Sharon Presnall said. “Elected officials are going to be facing a lot of challenges in the upcoming session, and bankers have a lot to offer in providing officeholders with information they need to make sound policy decisions for the state.”

The Directory also lists members’ committee assignments.  The bulk of IBA issues this session will likely go through Commerce, Judiciary, Ways and Means and Appropriation Committees, Presnall noted. “The IBA encourages bankers to review the committee assignments in the Directory and to be prepared to make contacts, particularly if their members serve on any of those committees,” she added.

With the state legislative session slated to begin Jan. 10, 2011, bankers will again be receiving the State Legislative Bulletin.  The Bulletin is a concise e-newsletter published weekly during the legislative session. It quickly informs IBA members on issues at the forefront of debate in the Iowa Legislature. To subscribe, contact the IBA’s Tim Laehn.

Another helpful resource for bankers is the Legislative Action Center, which allows bankers to easily contact legislators and regulators electronically. Letters on key pending legislation and regulations are posted on the site and can easily be edited and/or personalized for bankers to send to their respective elected officials and regulators.  The State and Federal Legislative Bulletins provide direct links to the Action Center.

Iowa banks have a major stake in many of the issues that will be discussed by the Legislature. Presnall said the IBA will provide bankers with all the tools needed to successfully communicate with elected leaders, but the best lobbyist for the industry will always be the IBA's member banks.
