High School Job Helps Wingert Find Career Path in Banking

A high school accounting class made Tiffanie Wingert realize she enjoyed working with numbers. When she was a senior, she took on a part-time job at Shelby County State Bank as a floating customer service representative working at all seven of the bank’s locations. “It was interesting to go to all seven locations and learn seven different ways branches operate within the same company,” she said.

Today, Wingert — a Buena Vista University graduate — is a personal banker at Shelby County State Bank in Harlan. She has also attended the IBA Internship program and the IBA Leadership Institute.

How did you get into banking as a career?
I took an accounting class in high school and fell in love with business and numbers. As a senior in high school, I got a job at Shelby County State Bank where I was a floating customer service representative — working in all seven locations. At that time, I had no intention of pursuing a career in banking. However, working there made me realize that was what I wanted to do. I continued to work at the bank throughout college as a part-time floating customer service representative and started full time after college as a floating customer service representative.

Prior to your current role, what was the most unusual or interesting job you’ve ever had, and what lesson did it teach you that you still use today?
Working at Shelby County State Bank was my first job. The floating customer service representative was an interesting job to have. It was interesting to go to all seven locations and learn seven different ways branches operate within the same company. I learned several lessons during this job: time management, working in different environments, customer service, adaptability and flexibility.

What is your best elevator pitch for why banking is a great career?
I love building long-term relationships with customers to help them with their financial needs.

How does getting involved with the Iowa Bankers Association help you and your bank?
Getting involved with the Iowa Bankers Association has helped me step out of my comfort zone and be confident in myself. My first IBA event was a summer internship program and most recently the IBA Leadership Institute. The IBA has given my bank numerous opportunities to advance its employees through training, conferences, schooling, etc. The IBA is a great advocate for community banks.

When you’re not at work, what do you like to do most?
I love being able to spend time with family and friends, watching sports (specifically the Kansas City Chiefs), going to country concerts and taking walks outside.

What is a quote or guiding principle you live by?
Life is short. Be happy and learn something new every day.
