Consulting Job Opens Career Path in Banking for Schulz-Stiles

Emily Schulz-Stiles was introduced to banking through a part-time consulting position while attending the University of Northern Iowa. That role allowed her to review banks’ compass modeling and forecasting. Through that role, she said she developed a passion for banking and applied for and accepted an accounting and human resources position in banking after graduating.

Today Schulz-Stiles, who joined the senior management team in 2016, is vice president of human resources at Citizens First Bank in Clinton. “The nice thing about working in a community bank is the environment is very family friendly and includes a lot of teamwork that helps mold the bank into the best it can be.”

How did you get into banking as a career?
In my last couple years in college, I was lucky enough to be offered a part-time consulting position that reviewed banks’ compass modeling and forecasting. I worked with a former bank president and CEO out of the Chicago area and developed a passion for the banking world. After college, I applied for an accounting/human resources position in 2013 at Citizens First Bank. I have been able to help with a variety of projects throughout the bank. I joined the senior management team in 2016. As the bank continues to grow, my role in human resources is growing as well.

Prior to your current role, what was the most unusual or interesting job you’ve ever had, and what lesson did it teach you that you still use today?
I have worked many part-time jobs throughout school. All of them have instilled the work ethic I learned at an early age growing up on our family farm. My most interesting job was probably the bird farm helping to raise the little chicks after they hatched from eggs. I have also worked in a small town gas station, administrative assistant for a law firm and in retail at American Eagle, Simpson Furniture and Kmart. I also worked in many factories over college summer breaks making everything from water fountains, black lights to mailboxes and sawhorses.

What is your best elevator pitch for why banking is a great career?
There are so many job opportunities and career path options in a local community bank that I never knew existed prior to working in one. There are many opportunities for growth and challenges to broaden your knowledge and skills. The nice thing about working in a community bank is the environment is very family friendly and includes a lot of teamwork that helps mold the bank into the best it can be.

How does getting involved with the Iowa Bankers Association help you and your bank?
The networking and communication with our peers has been very helpful, especially with all of the interesting things 2020 has thrown at us. It has been great to have a resource in the Iowa Bankers Association and the peer groups they have created with all of the local banks.

When you’re not at work, what do you like to do most?
I enjoy spending time enjoying anything outdoors with my family and kids. My kids keep me very busy and on my toes at all times. I have a daughter Everlee (5), a son Sawyor (1) and a daughter Remingtyn (4 months).

What is a quote or guiding principle you live by?
Today is another chance to get better. Don’t give up; great things take time.
