2020 Election: Republicans Make Big Gains in Iowa

While the results of the presidential race and many U.S. Senate elections were still undecided the day after the election, results in Iowa were relatively clear. While there will likely be recounts issued in several races, it appears the state’s congressional delegation received a dramatic makeover with Ashley Hinson defeating incumbent Abby Finkenauer and Mariannette Miller-Meeks wining a very close race against Rita Hart. Democrat Cindy Axne won a narrow victory over former Rep. David Young in Iowa’s third district, and Republican Randy Feenstra defeated J.D. Scholten in the state’s fourth district. Sen. Joni Ernst was also reelected to a second term in the U.S. Senate, defeating challenger Theresa Greenfield. The winners will join Sen. Chuck Grassley, who was not up for reelection this year in making up Iowa’s congressional delegation.

In the Iowa Senate, Republicans held firm to their majority and will boast a continued 32-18 seat majority. In the Iowa House of Representations, Republicans expanded their majority by six seats and hold a 59-41 majority, including two gains in suburban Polk County.

The IBA will provide a more in-depth analysis of the election results and what they mean for the banking industry in the next issue of Iowa Bankers Exchange.
