Dual Roles Help Lindsey Build Strong Work Ethic

Kim Lindsey became a banker while working on her associate’s degree at Hawkeye Community College in Waterloo, but she also held a second role at the same time. While she was still in high school, she joined the Iowa National Guard and still serves today. She says that job has helped her in her banking career as it taught her to “work harder, smarter and strive for goals to become what I want to become.”

Today, Lindsey is a compliance and BSA officer at Hardin County Savings Bank in Eldora. She also holds the rank of sergeant first class in the Iowa National Guard.

How did you get into banking as a career?
My family were all in some type of medical field, however, I liked more of the business side of things. When I was in college for my associate’s degree in accounting, I went to the bank in town and inquired about a job there. They ended up creating a part-time job for me as a teller. I did this until I completed my degree and ended up getting a full-time position as a teller.

Prior to your current role, what was the most unusual or interesting job you’ve ever had, and what lesson did it teach you that you still use today?
I joined the Iowa National Guard when I was a junior in high school and went to basic training the summer between my junior and senior years. This job has been interesting but very rewarding because it taught me to work harder, smarter and strive for goals to become what I want to become. I am now a sergeant first class as a platoon sergeant for F Company 334 Brigade Support Battalion out of Storm Lake.

What is your best elevator pitch for why banking is a great career?
Since my whole family is in the medical field, a banking career is where I can still help people just in a different way. I love the family atmosphere a banking environment provides.

How does getting involved with the Iowa Bankers Association help you and your bank?
With many encounters with the IBA, such as schools, peer groups and audits, I was asked to join the IBA Compliance Committee in 2016. I then moved back to my hometown and back to the first bank I ever got a job from and asked to join IBA Compliance Committee Group again. I was accepted in 2020. With joining with the IBA, I am able to stay on top of new or updated regulations better than I could by myself.

When you’re not at work, what do you like to do most?
Spending time with my two teenage boys and all their sporting events keep me busy. I am in a bowling league once a week and cannot forget the military and all their fun classes, drills and annual training.

What is a quote or guiding principle you live by?
Opportunities don’t come knocking on your door just by virtue of you doing nothing. You can either passively wait for opportunities to fall onto your lap or actively create them yourself.
