Lending a Comfortable Fit for Rosenboom

Prior to starting his banking career, John Rosenboom spent 10 years working in the information technology field. Working with customers as an active lender, he immediately found a banking career to be a comfortable fit. “For the first couple of years, I couldn’t believe they were actually paying me to drive around and talk to people,” he said.

Today, Rosenboom is vice president, agricultural and commercial lending at Heartland Bank in Manson. He is also chair of the Iowa Bankers Association’s Ag Committee this year.

How did you get into banking as a career?
I’m actively engaged in farming and was referred to apply for the job by my banker who was retiring from Heartland Bank.

Prior to your current role, what was the most unusual or interesting job you’ve ever had, and what lesson did it teach you that you still use today?
I was actually a network administrator for 10 years prior to transitioning into banking. I use the critical and logical thinking skills I picked up in IT daily, working within the bank and directly with customers.

What is your best elevator pitch for why banking is a great career?
Being an active lender is not what you think it is. If you work for the right culture, you are out and about meeting and working with clients. For the first couple of years, I couldn’t believe they were actually paying me to drive around and talk to people. Banking is a very rewarding career and if you’re good at it, you can pretty much live anywhere you want as every bank is looking for good employees.

How does getting involved with the Iowa Bankers Association help you and your bank?
I’ve been involved with the IBA since Ag Credit School my second year of banking and have attended other schools and training sessions throughout the years. The IBA offers great schools and training opportunities to hone your skills in all areas of the bank. I’ve also been involved with and chair the Ag Committee. The networking and continuous learning provide great benefits for me, the bank and, most importantly, the customers and clients we work with.

When you’re not at work, what do you like to do most?
My family is the fourth generation on the farm. We enjoy farming activities, collecting antique tractors and cars and have a couple other businesses we run on the side. Basically, when not at work, we’re working somewhere else.

What is a quote or guiding principle you live by?
Honesty, integrity, valuing relationships and working hard will take you wherever you’d like to go.
