Banking Provides New Career Path for Hughes

Rochelle Hughes didn’t have a banking background before she joined the human resources department at Fidelity Bank & Trust three years ago. She graduated from the University of Dubuque and majored in English literature and writing and minored in communication. Prior to working at the bank, she worked for a payroll company in which her primary responsibility was doing payroll taxes.

In three years as a human resources officer at Fidelity Bank & Trust in Worthington, Hughes has learned “an incredible amount” about banking and is grateful for the opportunity banking has provided. “Banking is a career that can lead you in many different directions,” she said. “Every day is different as things continue to change and evolve which keeps it interesting.”

How did you get into banking as a career?
I didn’t have a background in the banking industry prior to coming to Fidelity Bank & Trust. I previously worked for a payroll company primarily doing payroll taxes. I received an opportunity in the human resources department at Fidelity Bank, and I have learned an incredible amount about the banking industry in my three years here.

Prior to your current role, what was the most unusual or interesting job you’ve ever had, and what lesson did it teach you that you still use today?
I was a cashier at Sears in high school. This job taught me a lot about customer service and the importance of a good attitude no matter what situation arises.

What is your best elevator pitch for why banking is a great career?
Banking is a career that can lead you in many different directions. Every day is different as things continue to change and evolve which keeps it interesting. A career in banking is also a great way to get more involved in the community.
