Banking Career the Right Fit for Steger

Joan Steger says she was always interested in banking but wasn’t sure if she would fit in. After interviewing for a banking position and being rejected, that belief was initially realized. A few months later, however, another position opened and the person who interviewed her contacted her about applying. “I said, ‘Sure!’ And the rest is history,” she said.

Today, Steger is a regional customer service representative at Fidelity Bank & Trust in Dyersville—a career she enjoys because it allows her to help others. “Pride in our communities, the people we serve, and helping these same people attain financial stability and planning for the future is the best kind of reward anyone could ask for,” she said.

How did you get into banking as a career?
I had always been interested in banking but thought I wouldn’t fit in. I applied for a position at Fidelity Bank & Trust and didn’t make the cut. I figured it wasn’t meant to be. A few months later, the person who interviewed me, who is now the president, called me and asked if I would be opposed to him giving my name to another branch in Dyersville. I said, “Sure!” And the rest is history. I started as a teller, and have progressed my way up to regional customer service representative, overseeing the CSRs in the central region, which includes seven branches.

Prior to your current role, what was the most unusual or interesting job you’ve ever had, and what lesson did it teach you that you still use today?
I worked as a school secretary. That position taught me that everyone is important and everyone has a story — from the little child who is crying for their mom or dad and just wanted to be comforted all the way up to the principal who was only trying to best serve everyone. Patience, compassion and a sense of humor is so important when dealing with people. If others can see you are at peace and have a sense of joy, it will rub off!

What is your best elevator pitch for why banking is a great career?
At Fidelity Bank and Trust, we pride ourselves on being the Home Town Bank. With that being said, we are invested in our communities. Banking is an excellent choice for people who want to be part of helping their communities thrive and prosper. Pride in our communities, the people we serve, and helping these same people attain financial stability and planning for the future is the best kind of reward anyone could ask for.

How does getting involved with the Iowa Bankers Association help you and your bank?
The Iowa Bankers Association is an invaluable support system and is my go to for questions, training and networking that is available to grow both professionally and personally!

When you’re not at work, what do you like to do most?
I love spending time with family and friends! We are Hawkeye fans, and have really missed tailgating and football games this fall with our sons, daughters-in-law and grandchildren! It has always been a family affair!

What is a quote or guiding principle you live by?
I have two, and they are related. It is all about serving with joy in the people we meet. They are:

  • “Not all of us can do great things, but we can do small things with great love.”
  • “I alone cannot change the world, but i can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples.”
