Farwell Gains Work Ethic on the Farm

Heather Farwell learned the value of hard work while working with her sister on her uncle’s farm in high school. As part of a cheer squad, she needed money to help her parents pay for travel expenses to state and national competitions. Her uncle was so impressed with their effort, that he hired other members of Farwell’s cheer squad for the next three years. “To this day, my uncle still says we were the best part-time workers he has employed,” she said.

Today, Farwell is vice president – deposits and compliance at Citizens First Bank in Clinton and Camanche. “A career in banking is a great way to serve your community,” she said.

How did you get into banking as a career?
While attending college, I began working part time at Prudential Home Mortgage in Springfield, Illinois. I had the opportunity to learn the varied business channels within real estate mortgages, which led me to accepting a full-time position in secondary marketing, working with mortgage backed securities. During my time working in mortgage backed securities, I discovered that a career in banking was both challenging and rewarding. It provided valuable insights about other businesses and industries, which expanded my knowledge and experience.

Prior to your current role, what was the most unusual or interesting job you’ve ever had, and what lesson did it teach you that you still use today?
In high school, I was a member of a competitive cheer squad. We traveled and competed in both state and national programs. To help my parents with travel expenses, my uncle offered my sister and me the opportunity to work on his farm during the summer. He was so impressed with our attention to detail, he hired my cheer squad during the summer months to perform various tasks for the next three years. I understood no matter the job, your dedication to learn and your work ethic are what matter. I discovered trust and teamwork are critical components to the successful completion of any project. To this day, my uncle still says we were the best part-time workers he has employed.

What is your best elevator pitch for why banking is a great career?
A career in banking is a great way to serve your community. Providing financial education to help fulfill the dream of homeownership, starting a new business, or preparing for future savings is not only rewarding but supports your continued investment and economic development in the community you serve.

How does getting involved with the Iowa Bankers Association help you and your bank?
Iowa Bankers Association provides comprehensive education for both new and experienced bankers. The IBA’s leadership and advocacy programs are extremely valuable for developing the next generation of bankers.

When you’re not at work, what do you like to do most?
Cooking, exercising, reading and spending time with family and friends.

What is a quote or guiding principle you live by?
“What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.”

— Oliver Wendell Holmes
