Banking Job Turns Into 18-Year Career for Hodzic

Hodzic AldinAldin Hodzic accepted a teller position while working on a degree in business management. He spent his days as a teller and took classes in the evening. It didn’t take long for him to realize that banking was an industry in which he wanted to pursue a long-term career. “I was intrigued by how the banking world worked and how all the different areas of the bank came together to get the job done,” he said. “The more I learned, the more I wanted to stick with banking and learn the ins and outs of the business.”

How did you get into banking as a career?

When I started college, I needed a job that had flexible hours and co-workers who understood the importance of higher education, so I started working as a teller during the day and went to school in the evening. As a teller, I was intrigued by how the banking world worked and how all the different areas of the bank came together to get the job done. The more I learned, the more I wanted to stick with banking and learn the ins and outs of the business.

Prior to your current role, what was the most unusual or interesting job you’ve ever had, and what lesson did it teach you that you still use today?

I’ve worked in banking for the past 18 years, but prior to that, I spent a few years working construction jobs with my dad. Working in construction was very rewarding because I had to work hard for an extended period of time to see the results. This process taught me patience, time management, and the ability to collaborate with others to achieve a shared goal.

What is your best elevator pitch for why banking is a great career?

The banking world is constantly evolving and changing, whether it’s due to new products, regulations or client needs. When you are part of it, you have no choice but to constantly strive to be a better version of yourself.

How does getting involved with the Iowa Bankers Association help you and your bank?

Being involved with the IBA gives us an opportunity to be part of something bigger than ourselves and have access to resources such as trainings, publications and networking.

When you’re not at work, what do you like to do most?

I enjoy spending time with my wife, Mirsada, and our two kids, Zayd (5) and Zerina (2). I also enjoy playing golf.

What is a quote or guiding principle you live by?

One of my favorite quotes is by Albert Einstein: “Strive not to be a success but rather to be of value.”
