IBA Member Spotlight: Brandi Herron

Herron Helps Customers Through Every Stage

Herron, Brandi (2)Brandi Herron, universal banker for Guthrie County State Bank, says banking is a rewarding industry because of the “unmatched” relationships she gets to form with customers. She has learned to navigate the changing rules and regulations that come with banking with a positive mindset.

Herron has appreciated the opportunities for professional development and networking with the IBA. Outside of work, she can be found cheering on her sons at sporting events or enjoying motorcycle rides with her husband. She lives by a guiding quote, “Strive not to be a success but rather to be of value.”

What drove you to choose a career in banking?

I was doing taxes in 2017 through H&R Block and after the season was over I started searching for full-time employment.

It just so happened all the ladies I worked with at the tax office were in banking or retired from banking, and they encouraged me to apply for a position at Great Western Bank in Perry that was available.

Describe one life experience that taught you a lesson that you apply to your banking career.

I became a single mom at 21 and left college to work full-time and support my children. This taught me that things are always changing and it’s about how you react to the change that matters.

In banking, this mindset has helped tremendously since regulations and processes are constantly changing, but it’s our attitude and response to the change that really makes the difference for ourselves, our teammates and our customers.

What is your best elevator pitch for why banking is a great career?

Banking is a career that is always changing, allowing for growth and new learning opportunities. The personal interaction you get to have with your customers is unmatched – you get to be there for them in the good times and the bad.

Banking also is the perfect blend of work life balance. It allows you to be present for your family as well as your work.

how does getting involved with the iowa bankers association help you and your bank?

Iowa Bankers has been instrumental in furthering my knowledge in banking and making me a more confident banker overall. The seminars and classes offered are so informative and relevant to the times, as well as the immense amount of opportunities for networking we are able to do at these events.

Iowa Bankers also helps our bank with our wonderful insurance benefits and payroll processing, always offering a friendly face or voice on the phone to be there answering questions or concerns.

when you’re not at work, what do you like to do most?

When I am not at work you will typically find me at a sporting event of some sort for my two teenage boys – I pride myself on being their biggest fan! I also really enjoy motorcycle rides or trips with my husband and our friends. Whether it’s a long trip or even just a few hours, wind therapy is a real thing!

what is a quote or guiding principle you live by?

My favorite quote is from Albert Einstein and it says, “Strive not to be a success but rather to be of value.” I think about this quote in regard to my kids and being present and there for them no matter what. I also think of this professionally, being of value to my team, organization and customers, doing what we say we will, and standing strong on doing it the right way with the customer’s best interest in mind.
