Problem Solving Drives Varner in Banking
Erica Varner’s personal philosophy when it comes to helping other solve problems is to tackle the problem as if it was her own. “You never know how much helping someone else problem solve will impact yourself and help you build relationships,” she said. That philosophy guides her in her role as accounting specialist at Community Savings Bank in Manchester.
Varner, who holds an associate’s degree from Kirkwood Community College and a bachelor’s degree from Upper Iowa University, says she enjoys banking because it gives her an opportunity to give back to her community. “You get to see first-hand how that effects them and how grateful they are,” she said. “It’s a great feeling to be able to give back to your community.”
What drove you to choose a career in banking?
My business administration degree at Kirkwood required an internship. The program was financial services based, but mainly focused on the banking industry. I applied for a part-time teller position at a local bank and grew to really like the atmosphere banking brings.
What is one lesson working in the banking industry has taught you that you can apply to your everyday life?
The lesson the banking industry has taught me is to solve every problem as if it were your own. You never know how much helping someone else problem solve will impact yourself and help you build relationships. It also taught me that it’s OK to ask questions. That person you ask may make a bigger impact in your life than you think.
What is your best elevator pitch for why banking is a great career?
Banking is a great career, because you get to help people in your community. You get to see first-hand how that effects them and how grateful they are. It’s a great feeling to be able to give back to your community.
How does getting involved with the Iowa Bankers Association help you and your bank?
Getting involved with the IBA helps me advance my knowledge and become a better banker. It is also a great way to network and share ideas with peers.
When you’re not at work, what do you like to do most?
I spend my free time with family and friends, and I spend most of it being outdoors. This summer, my husband and I have spent most of our free time golfing, traveling and riding our UTV. I also like to work on craft projects with my Cricut and read.
What is a quote or guiding principle you live by?
“All dreams are within reach. All you have to do is keep moving towards them.”
