IBA Member Spotlight: Jacob Hackman

Hackman Helps Make Life-Changing Transactions

Jacob Hackman 2Jacob Hackman, ag/business banker for Farmers State Bank, says banking is a rewarding industry because of the opportunity to help with customers’ “life-changing” transactions everyday. He also enjoys working with and learning about industries such as agriculture, healthcare and retail.

Hackman said involvement with the IBA provides opportunities for learning and networking. He encourages anyone considering a career in banking to invest in themselves and to not pass on opportunities to take on new tasks and roles. Hackman strives to live with a positive outlook and lives by the quote, “It is what you make of it.”

When looking back on your banking career, what achievement are you most proud of and why?

Banking is a very rewarding industry. What seems simple to bankers can be a life changing transaction for many people. Buying your first car, buying your first home, or getting help to start your own business. These are all very important to a person’s life, and helping them achieve their goal makes the career worth it!

What piece of advice would you give to your past self or to anyone considering a career in banking?

Always remember to invest yourself. Don’t pass up on the opportunity to take on another task, help with another role, or take on other learning opportunities!

What is your best elevator pitch for why banking is a great career?

Banking is great because you aren’t secluded to one industry. A banker can work with and learn about health care, ag, manufacturing, or retail all in the same day. At a bank, you are truly given the opportunity to learn about different industries every day.

How does getting involved with the Iowa Bankers Association help you and your bank?

The IBA offers fantastic learning sessions and networking opportunities. A conversation with another banker may help you find ways to make processes more efficient, or create a connection allowing you to assist another community bank through a participation. Connecting through the IBA can offer many ways to expand your knowledge and your institution!

When you’re not at work, what do you like to do most?

Be around friends, enjoy local restaurants, golf and spend time with coworkers!

What is a quote or guiding principle you live by?

“It is what you make of it” – While it seems simple, it’s a good reminder that any task, project or role can be positive if you put in the effort and turn it into what you want!
