Desire to Make an Impact Drives Mason in Banking
Jeff Mason’s banking career started at a “big bank” in Chicago, where managed a treasury services team. Although he gained valuable experience there, he wanted to work where he felt like he was making a positive impact on his customers and his community. He found what he was looking for at Bank Iowa, where he works as the loan documentation manager.
Mason says it’s important to be flexible in banking. “Working in banking has allowed me to wear many different hats,” he said. “Being open to those opportunities and learning to think creatively to solve the hurdles that pop up throughout the day continues to be a very rewarding experience.”
What drove you to choose a career in banking?
Out of college I wasn’t sure what direction I wanted to go. I ended up working a temp job at one of the big banks in Chicago. I was eventually hired full time and managed a treasury services team. While I gained a lot of experience, I wasn’t connected to what I was doing. Now, working at a community bank I get to see how my contributions and those of my co-workers make a positive impact on our customers and the larger community.
What is one lesson working in the banking industry has taught you that you can apply to your everyday life?
Be flexible and say yes. Working in banking has allowed me to wear many different hats. Being open to those opportunities and learning to think creatively to solve the hurdles that pop up throughout the day continues to be a very rewarding experience.
What is your best elevator pitch for why banking is a great career?
Banking is an ever-changing industry, whether it is a new regulation, product or technology, there is always something different on the horizon. That change provides you with many opportunities to learn and grow in your career no matter what stage you are at.
How does getting involved with the Iowa Bankers Association help you and your bank?
I am fortunate to have a leader that has encouraged me to take advantage of the many different educational events provided by the Iowa Bankers Association. As a result, I’ve been able to learn from and with colleagues across the state and bring that experience back to Bank Iowa.
When you’re not at work, what do you like to do most?
Spending time outside with my wife and two boys gardening, biking and playing. I also volunteer at my church and serve on a nonprofit board of directors.
What is a quote or guiding principle you live by?
