What drove you to choose a career in banking?

I have always enjoyed building relationships and helping people move their agriculture operations/businesses forward. Banking has given me the opportunity to work with customers, understand what their goals might be, and provide financial tools that make an impact on their operations. I also enjoy being able to serve and strengthen my community.

Describe one life experience that taught you a lesson that you apply to your banking career.

Prior to my banking career I worked in construction for a friend’s family company. Being in this position I saw the challenges of running a small business. There were times when cash flow was tight and decisions were stressful. Having financial guidance would have made a huge difference. Seeing that firsthand taught me the value of having a trusted banker — someone who listens to and understands the situation. That experience is something I carry into my banking career every day and I can relate to my agriculture and small business customers.

What is your best elevator pitch for why banking is a great career?

Banking is a great career because you get to make a real impact on people and businesses every day. You get to help clients grow and help them reach their goals, while also learning about how their operation works. You also get to serve your community and become a trusted advisor in the community.

how does getting involved with the iowa bankers association help you and your bank?

Being involved with the Iowa Bankers Association not only gives you the opportunity to grow your career in banking with a variety of seminars/schooling, but also gives you the opportunity to meet bankers from all different markets across the state and build relationships. I have had the privilege to attend Intro to Commercial Lending School and Commercial Lending School and have taken a lot of information from the classes not only for myself but also for my peers at First National Bank.

when you’re not at work, what do you like to do most?

When I am not at work I love to spend my time outdoors, from camping and fishing trips with my wife Maria, to spending most of the fall in a tree stand bow hunting for whitetail deer. I also love anything related to sports, from playing to watching. On Sundays, you can catch me cheering on the Green Bay Packers, and on some weekends, you can catch me spending time in the gym either playing basketball or volleyball with my wife and friends.

what is a quote or guiding principle you live by?

“Work hard, stay humble, and make time for the things that keep you grounded,” a quote my former boss used to say a lot. Another quote that I have taken from a teacher from high school that has always stuck with me is, “Success is built on consistency, not by shortcuts.”
