VandeWeerd Embraces Change for Opportunity
Jody VandeWeerd, deposit operations specialist for Peoples Bank in Rock Valley, has learned that when one door closes, another door opens. She made the transition to banking in 2022 after a career in nursing. Now, she takes pride in telling people where she works and said Peoples Bank stands up to its vision statement of “Where Values Matter.”
VandeWeerd is currently participating in the 2026 IBA Leadership Institute and values the networking opportunities that come with the experience. She said one of the guiding principles in her life is “Change brings opportunity.” 
What drove you to choose a career in banking?
While I was still working my homecare registered nurse position, there was a change of hours due to one of my clients “graduating” out of the program. At that time, I was either going to have less hours or have to pick up a new client farther away, requiring greater driving. At that time, I made the decision to make a career change, and I joined Peoples Bank in September 2022.
Describe one life experience that taught you a lesson you apply to your banking career.
With my change in careers, the experience taught me that when one door closes, another door opens. And in the medical world, we check and re-check everything so many times, and its similar in banking where we check and verify so much before we complete or finalize things.
What is your best elevator pitch for why banking is a great career?
I take pride in saying I work for Peoples Bank, which is a great organization. Peoples Bank stands up to its vision statement of “Where Values Matter.” They truly value their employees, and the communities they serve.
How does getting involved with the Iowa Bankers Association help you and your bank?
I love the resources the Iowa Bankers Association provides for us. I am currently going through the IBA Leadership Institute and the IBA has put a lot of time and effort into the education for us, the learning materials provided, as well as the speakers. The networking that comes from these opportunities is also very valuable.
When you’re not at work, what do you like to do most?
When I’m not at work, I enjoy spending time with family and friends. I enjoy long walks in the evenings. I am looking forward to traveling more in the future.
What is a quote or guiding principle you live by?
A couple of quotes that always seem to fit into my life and serve as good everyday principles are: “Change brings opportunity,” “Do not be afraid of growing slowly; be afraid only of standing still,” and “Do the best you can until you know better. Then, when you know better, do better!”
