Black: Decades of Service With Integrity
Kevin Black, CEO of Heartland Bank, has been serving the same organization for over 42 years. His focus on building deep relationships with customers and the network around him has helped multiple generations of families and businesses succeed over the decades.
Black said the IBA has served as a strategic partner both for the bank and his own personal and professional development. When he’s not working, Black enjoys spending time with his nine grandchildren, supporting Iowa State athletics, and improving his skills in the kitchen. Black lives by the principle of acting with integrity even when no one is watching.
When looking back on your banking career, what achievement are you most proud of and why?
Being with the same organization for over 42 years, while serving as president and CEO during 32 of those years, has allowed me to lead an organization that has grown and helped many multi-generational families and businesses succeed over the decades. The opportunity to mentor and lead numerous employees in the development of their successful careers has also been enriching.
What piece of advice would you give to your past self or to anyone considering a career in banking?
Always focus on building deep relationships with customers and developing a professional network.
What is your best elevator pitch for why banking is a great career?
A banking career allows you to make a real difference in helping people reach personal and financial goals during their lifetime, and at the same time, have the opportunity to impact your community positively.
How does getting involved with the Iowa Bankers Association help you and your bank?
Because the IBA is the premier banking association in the country, being involved has allowed a higher level of personal and professional development for me and our entire staff. The IBA serves as a strategic partner through legislative advocacy, professional networking, compliance resources and operational support. Being involved with the IBA makes our bank much stronger and competitive.
When you’re not at work, what do you like to do most?
Spend time with our nine grandchildren, attend Iowa State athletic events, and continually improve my chef skills.
What is a quote or guiding principle you live by?
Always act with integrity, even when no one is watching.
