Building Relationships to Better Serve
Mason Peter, ag/commercial lender at Viking State Bank & Trust, knows successful lending is about much more than numbers. He prioritizes getting out of the office to visit customers on their farms and at their businesses to build relationships that help him better understand the full picture. Mason embraces being a lifelong learner, and enjoys working through new challenges. Outside of work, he enjoys staying active through weightlifting, running, basketball, spending time on his family’s farm, golfing, or boating with family and friends.
What’s something ABOUT YOUR ROLE PEOPLE MIGHT NOT EXPECT?
A significant aspect of my role is getting to know the customer beyond the numbers. Our lending decisions are often guided by the strong relationships we build. To develop these relationships, it is important to get out of the bank and spend time on their farm or in their business. This helps us better understand all aspects of their operation and provide the best possible service.
What’s the best piece of career advice you’ve ever received?
I started banking as an intern in college and my first boss told me, “I can teach you how to underwrite a loan and the banking process, but the interpersonal skills are harder to teach and take time and experience to master.” That advice has always stuck with me, and I believe it applies to any customer-facing role, not just banking. Building relationships and communicating effectively are skills that continue to develop throughout your career.
If you could instantly become an expert in one thing, what would it be?
I would be hesitant to be considered an “expert” in one thing as that would imply there is little left to learn. I enjoy continually learning and challenging myself. Life would be boring otherwise.
what’s an interesting or lesser-known fact about you?
I have always been interested in exercise and movement which has led me to stay active through regular workouts – whether that is weightlifting, running/cardio, or enjoying a fun sport like basketball.
What do you do outside of work to recharge?
Outside of work, I enjoy most things outdoors, whether that is working on my family’s farm or something more relaxing, such as golf or boating on the lake with family and friends.
