Cisney: Guided by Relationships
Mike Cisney, chief community banking officer for Lincoln Savings Bank, was inspired by his uncle to choose a career in banking, saying, “I always looked up to him and hearing about the work he did and the relationships he built was very appealing to me.”
Cisney said the bank looks to the IBA when handling unique situations or looking to grow and develop their teams. His grandpa taught him if he does work he’s proud of, he’ll never have to wonder if its good enough. When he’s not working, Cisney enjoys spending time with his family and making memories traveling with them. 
What drove you to choose a career in banking?
When my uncle retired from the Air Force, his next career was in banking. I always looked up to him and hearing about the work he did and the relationships he built was very appealing to me. Every day we get the opportunity to help our customers reach their goals and make a real impact in our communities. That is very rewarding work.
Describe one life experience that taught you a lesson you apply to your banking career.
As a kid, I would mow my grandparent’s yard and ask my grandpa if I did a good job. He told me that if I did a job that I was proud of, I’d never have to wonder if it was good enough. I’ve always tried to hold myself to that standard with my work and the relationships I build.
What is your best elevator pitch for why banking is a great career?
Banking is a people business and if you like people, there is no better career. For individuals and businesses, we as bankers are there for every step along the way to help them reach their goals, celebrate wins, and support during difficult times. Not many careers offer that opportunity.
How does getting involved with the Iowa Bankers Association help you and your bank?
Whether the bank is looking for insight and guidance on how to handle a unique situation or we are looking to continue to grow and develop our teams, the IBA has a tremendous amount of knowledge and resources available to help bankers and bankers succeed. Additionally, the IBA makes it very easy to build a network with other bankers and experts in our field. The IBA is a great organization that all bankers in Iowa should be engaging with.
When you’re not at work, what do you like to do most?
My wife is an elementary principal here in Ankeny and we have two boys (17 & 5) so we have a busy home life. We love to travel as a family and try to find new and memorable experiences that we can all enjoy together.
What is a quote or guiding principle you live by?
Keep the important things important.
At work and in my personal life, I have always found that decisions are easier and things are better when I keep my priorities front and center.
