Iowa Bankers Association Presents Five Student Athlete Achievement Awards at Iowa Girls’ High School State Basketball Tournament

Winners receive $1,000 scholarship to college of their choice

JOHNSTON, IOWA (March 10, 2020) — Five Iowa high school seniors received a 2020 Iowa Bankers Association Student Athlete Achievement Award during the Iowa Girls’ High School State Basketball Tournament on March 6-7 in Des Moines. One student from each class was awarded a $1,000 scholarship from the IBA to the college of her choice.

Scholarship recipients included:

  • Class 1A: Miranda Peters, Marquette Catholic High School, Bellevue
  • Class 2A: Riley Hiscocks, West Hancock High School, Britt
  • Class 3A: Julia Merfeld, Clear Lake High School, Clear Lake
  • Class 4A: Rachel Wohlgemuth, Ballard High School, Huxley
  • Class 5A: Lexie Godfrey, Cedar Falls High School, Cedar Falls

Scholarship recipients were selected based on their academic performance, athletic participation, leadership skills and community involvement.

“Not only do these students excel on the court and in the classroom, but they also go above and beyond to serve their communities. We’re proud to recognize their achievements with this award,” said Tara Deering-Hansen, the IBA’s vice president of marketing and communications. “Our goal with this scholarship program is to help students fund their higher education. Helping Iowans reach their financial goals is what Iowa banks are all about.”

For three decades, the IBA has sponsored the Student Athlete Achievement Award program in partnership with the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union and Iowa High School Athletic Association. The program includes awards to student athletes in basketball, wrestling and football. The Iowa Bankers Association has awarded more than $265,000 in scholarships since the program began.
