IBA Member Spotlight: Catherine Lange

Lange: One Woman, Many Hats

Cathy2Catherine Lange started at First Community Bank in July 1996. Her formal title is cashier. However, with it being a small bank, she’s found that she needs to wear a lot of hats. In addition to her cashier role, she helps with operations, IT and compliance, and is a security officer. “Banking offers many different opportunities including customer service, lending and compliance. The opportunities are endless,” she said.

In her time as a banker, Lange has seen a lot of changes, especially with technology. She’s realized that the banking industry requires a willingness to continuously learn. In addition, she believes that banking also requires strong communication skills, attention to detail and customer service experience. “Success is no accident. It’s hard work and perseverance. Above all, you need to be dedicated to the job, your coworkers and your community,” she noted.

What is your job title/position at your bank?

My formal title is cashier, but I also help with operations, IT and compliance. Additionally, I am a security officer. In a small bank, you wear a lot of hats.

When looking back on your banking career, what achievement are you most proud of and why?

I started at First Community Bank in July 1996. Since then, I have been fortunate to work through all the changes in technology. When the bank purchased three branches, I was able to see the coordination, teamwork and effort it took firsthand.

What piece of advice would you give to your past self or to anyone considering a career in banking?

Banking requires strong communications skills, the willingness to continuously learn, attention to detail and customer service experience. If you have these skills, you are a great candidate for a career in banking.

What is your best elevator pitch for why banking is a great career?

Banking offers many different opportunities, including customer service, lending and compliance. The opportunities are endless.

How does getting involved with the Iowa Bankers Association help you and your bank?

The IBA has been a vital and strong partner to First Community Bank. They offer their many avenues of expertise when we need anything or have questions. Their annual audits, education opportunities and chances to network with other bankers has helped me tremendously.

When you’re not at work, what do you like to do most?

My husband and I enjoy taking motorcycle trips and spending time with family.
