Hammers Finds Career Path After Maternity Leave
When she began her banking career, Chloe Hammers was unsure where her path was going to lead and how she would advance beyond her first position. When she returned from maternity leave in 2021, Hammers felt more stuck than ever. However, to her surprise, she was promoted to deposit operations manager at Malvern Bank. She said, “I probably would have laughed if someone told me I’d transition to management three years into my career, but I’m so grateful for the opportunity and what it’s provided for my family!”
This path of surprise shaped her advice for others which is to be ready for the next best thing because you never know when it will happen. Hammers believes that everything happens for a reason, and that you’re always where you’re meant to be. She said, “Whether or not you think you have the experience or not, take a leap of faith and go for what you want.”
When looking back on your banking career, what achievement are you most proud of and why?
Because I work in a smaller community bank, I was unsure where my path would lead or if there would be opportunities to advance. I distinctly remember feeling discouraged and quite frankly, stuck, after returning from maternity leave in 2021. To my surprise, my supervisor at the time was resigning soon, and I’d been chosen to take on the role of deposit operations manager. I probably would have laughed if someone told me I’d transition to management three years into my career, but I’m so grateful for the opportunity and what it’s provided for my family!
What piece of advice would you give to your past self or to anyone considering a career in banking?
The next best thing may be right around the corner! Whether or not you think you have the experience or not, take a leap of faith and go for what you want.
What is your best elevator pitch for why banking is a great career?
Banking is ever-changing! I learn something new almost daily. I appreciate being part of an industry that provides growth and keeps me on my toes.
How does getting involved with the Iowa Bankers Association help you and your bank?
The IBA provides an array of training opportunities, compliance tools and education resources. I’ve been fortunate enough to serve as a Women in Banking Advisory Member the past two years and have met some amazing peers in the process. Personally, I benefit most from their online peer groups and compliance hotline.
When you’re not at work, what do you like to do most?
I have three kids, and they keep me pretty busy! We can usually be found at a sporting event but enjoy just about any outdoor activity in our free time. Traveling is super important to my husband and I, and we hope to visit all 50 states eventually.
What is a quote or guiding principle you live by?
Everything happens for a reason! We may not know why in the moment, or ever, but I believe we’re always right where we’re meant to be.
