Friesen: Propelled in Banking by Relationships
Darcy Friesen, chief compliance officer at Lincoln Savings Bank, has worked hard to support that work her bank does by developing and building out programs. However, she is most proud of the relationships that she has grown during her career. “I believe that what makes us successful in banking is when we work well with others and can truly collaborate,” she said.
Friesen feels like the IBA has helped elevate the work Lincoln Savings Bank does. She added the IBA has been an amazing resource for questions, assisting with compliance reviews and developing professional skills at training events. “I believe that the IBA helps our bank to elevate our compliance program,” she said.
When looking back on your banking career, what achievement are you most proud of and why?
Through my career, I have had the opportunity to develop and build out programs, but I am most proud of the relationships and bonds I have developed with the people I’ve worked. This includes people I’ve reported to, who have reported to me, and other teams within the bank. I believe that what makes us successful in banking is when we work well with others and can truly collaborate.
What piece of advice would you give to your past self or to anyone considering a career in banking?
Try it! A career in banking can be amazing. It will no doubt be challenging at times, but it is absolutely worth it.
What is your best elevator pitch for why banking is a great career?
Banking is filled with so many incredible people with a variety of different jobs. Prior to working in banking, I had the misconception that banks only had tellers and loan officers. With such a variety of jobs, you can try different roles and find your path. I was a teller for a very short time before finding myself in the risk management and compliance area of the bank where I have been now for 20 years. I was not aware the job I do today existed before I started working at a bank, but now, I can’t imagine doing anything else.
How does getting involved with the Iowa Bankers Association help you and your bank?
The IBA is an amazing resource for questions, assisting with compliance reviews, and training. I believe that the IBA helps our bank to elevate our compliance program. There are many things to keep track of with changes to regulations and banking in general. The IBA helps bring this all together which is incredibly valuable to me and my organization.
When you’re not at work, what do you like to do most?
When I’m not at work, I enjoy spending time with my family, and I love a good crime documentary show or podcast!
