IBA Member Spotlight: Deb Worm

Banking Allows Worm to Positively Impact Others

Worm, Deb 2019Deb Worm didn’t experience a general pull into the banking industry. Rather, it was a specific bank that ignited her fire for a banking career. While working at a local distance learning center, she was introduced to F&M Bank through a partnership on community focused programs. “I was so impressed with their commitment to community, I knew it was an organization I wanted to be a part of,” she said.

Now, as an assistant vice president at F&M Bank, she enjoys having the opportunity to make a positive impact on others, especially business owners. “If you are fortunate, you can travel the journey with a business owner from inception to reality of their dream,” she said. “You are often with them in the highs and lows, which creates a bond you don’t find in other business relationships.”

What drove you to choose a career in banking?

It was not necessarily the banking aspect as much as it was about F&M Bank as an organization and their commitment to serving others. At the time I was working for a local distance learning center. As the director, I partnered with F&M Bank on community focused programs. I was so impressed with their commitment to community, I knew it was an organization I wanted to be a part of.

What is one lesson working in the banking industry has taught you, and how do you apply it to your everyday life?

Banks cannot thrive if the communities they serve are not healthy. Part of F&M’s “Why” is a commitment to our community and helping individuals and businesses be the best versions of themselves so they can attain their dreams. This holds true in my personal life as well. I want those around me to be happy and successful and I will do what I can to make that happen.

What is your best elevator pitch for why banking is a great career?

Banking allows you to impact others in a positive way. If you are fortunate, you can travel the journey with a business owner from inception to reality of their dream. You are often with them in the highs and lows, which creates a bond you don’t find in other business relationships.

How does getting involved with the Iowa Bankers Association help you and your bank?

The Iowa Bankers Association provides community banks valuable resources. I was fortunate to been given the opportunity to attend the IBA Leadership Institute in 2022. The quality of speakers and programming that IBA put together was incredible. This programing gives community banks access to top notch training that helps them to develop the types of leaders they need to be successful.

When you’re not at work, what do you like to do most?

I love spending time with my family. We all enjoy outdoor activities and travel, so I try to plan activities that allow me to bring the three together. F&M Bank encourages work-life balance, so I never have to feel guilty when I make personal time a priority.

What is a quote or guiding principle you live by?

“Embrace the highs and the lows on your journey. Your mountaintop experiences will be amazing and the most fulfilling but it’s the valleys that often bring the most growth and significant change.” I have been fortunate enough that I have had more highs than lows but looking back I find myself thankful for the difficult times. They have shaped me into who I am today.
