Schroeder Leans on Versatility in Banking

Schroeder, a banker with First Security Bank & Trust since 2010, currently has the role of vice president, serving as a compliance manager. She encourages bankers to not be afraid to work in different positions throughout the banking industry because it offers many diverse options and there is something for almost everyone looking to make a career.
When looking back on your banking career, what achievement are you most proud of and why?
Even though I have worked in the financial industry for over two decades, First Security Bank & Trust is the first time I worked in a smaller community bank. While at First Security Bank & Trust, I have had the opportunity to work in several different roles and with multiple departments throughout the bank. Learning various functions within the bank has not only given me a strong background in banking but allowed me to share that knowledge with people new to banking.
What piece of advice would you give to your past self or to anyone considering a career in banking?
Don’t be afraid to work in different positions within the bank to find something that is compatible for you. Sometimes we enter a position that we think we would love, later to find out it isn’t what you thought it was going to be. Or you go into a position without knowing exactly what to expect and find out that you have found your niche. The banking industry offers so many diverse options that there is something for almost everyone who is looking to make a career.
What is your best elevator pitch for why banking is a great career?
Banking offers so many different career avenues. Regardless of what your core interest is, there is something in banking for you. Whether it is working with customers to help them reach their financial goals, working with numbers to analyze financial data, or managing projects to help create a successful bank, the banking industry offers something for everyone.
How does getting involved with the Iowa Bankers Association help you and your bank?
Iowa Bankers offers so many valuable resources that go beyond just the fundamentals of banking. They not only offer training in a multitude of functions and departments within a bank, but they also offer opportunities for leadership training, advocacy, peer group meetings and lots of opportunities to network and meet others in the banking industry. The number of training opportunities that I have been able to take advantage of has helped bolster my career and contributed to my success.
When you’re not at work, what do you like to do most?
I love to kayak. Being on the water and enjoying nature in the summertime offers a relaxing way to spend the day close to wildlife.
