GerstandtBanking Insights: Heidi Gerstandt’s Journey

Heidi Gerstandt, senior vice president at Cherokee State Bank, has driven significant advancements since joining in 2017, focusing on technology, efficiency and customer service. She advises continual education for bankers and finds banking rewarding for its community impact. Heidi values the IBA for networking, resources and advocacy in regulatory matters. Outside of work, she enjoys family time, golfing and community involvement, and is guided by the principle, “Never be afraid of change.”

Senior Vice President, Risk Management Officer

Where did you attend college/what degree(s) have you obtained? (optional)

Midland University – Fremont, Nebraska. Received my bachelor’s in accounting and business management with a minor in public relations

When looking back on your banking career, what achievement are you most proud of and why?

 In general, coming to Cherokee State Bank and to see how far we have come as a bank from when I started in 2017 to now. Being a part of the team who took on the challenges of new technology, creating operational efficiencies, and overall, providing exceptional service to our customers during unprecedented regulatory and economic times.

What piece of advice would you give to your past self or to anyone considering a career in banking?

Don’t become complacent and continue to educate yourself in all aspects of banking. You never know when you will leverage that knowledge.

What is your best elevator pitch for why banking is a great career?

 The positive impact you can make in this career is so rewarding from serving bank customers, to internal employees, and the local communities.

How does getting involved with the Iowa Bankers Association help you and your bank?

The peer group connections as well as the resources that IBA provides is invaluable, especially for community banks. From the online portal to training and audit and compliance services, Cherokee State Bank has used every one of these avenues to improve our bank while better serving our customers. Knowing that you have someone in your corner like IBA who will advocate for your industry is also a huge benefit especially in our current regulatory environment.

When you’re not at work, what do you like to do most?

Spending quality time with my family, husband Tyler and our two kids Ruby and Riggs. I enjoy golfing and spending time at Lake Okoboji.

I chair the Cherokee Chamber of Commerce Women in Business Committee and enjoy organizing and attending those events.

I am a volunteer coach of the high school girl’s golf team and also help with the annual junior golf camp in Cherokee.
