Jon HummelJon Hummel, vice president of commercial and industrial banking at West Bank, has more than 14 years of experience in the banking industry. During this time, he has built strong relationships with his clients and worked to help them achieve their financial goals. In 2024, Hummel was recognized for his hard work as a recipient of the American Bankers Association’s (ABA) Emerging Leaders Award. “I am most proud of this award as it is given out each year to 12 bankers from across the nation. It was quite the honor to be nominated for this award and receive it on stage in New York City at the ABA Annual Convention.”

He believes it is important to be a team player and to say yes when asked to do something, because you should never feel above a task.

When looking back on your banking career, what achievement are you most proud of and why?

In 2024, I received the American Bankers Association’s (ABA) Emerging Leaders Award. I am most proud of this award as it is given out each year to 12 bankers from across the nation. It was quite the honor to be nominated for this award and receive it on stage in New York City at the ABA Annual Convention.

What piece of advice would you give to your past self or to anyone considering a career in banking?

Always stay hungry and humble. Always say yes when asked to do something and never be above a task. Be a team player and encourage others around you.

What is your best elevator pitch for why banking is a great career?

Most days in the world of banking, especially commercial banking, look different as we are assisting clients in so many different fields of business. You get to learn about various industries and be a trusted advisor to your clients. Many of these clients become lifelong friends as well. The variety in the field of banking, coupled with helping clients achieve their dreams provides for a very fulfilling career.

How does getting involved with the Iowa Bankers Association help you and your bank?

The IBA provides a tremendous number of resources to their members. There are countless trainings offered, resources to tap and a network of bankers from across the state to reach out to assist with any needs. The IBA also has invaluable strength at both the Iowa Capitol and in Washington to lobby for our industry.

When you’re not at work, what do you like to do most?

My favorite activity is spending time on the golf course, of course! It’s even more fun now that my two sons have gotten so interested in the game.

What is a quote or guiding principle you live by?

“We are only here for a short period of time, so make each day count and get 1% better each day.”
