Koch: Elevating Banking Excellence

He played a key role in growing and selling NXT Bank to Heartland Bank and Trust Company. Nathan advises aspiring bankers to get involved in their communities, as it adds value and personal satisfaction.

He praises community banking for its deep relationship-building opportunities and the rewarding experience of helping clients achieve their goals. His guiding principle is, “Best mouse trap wins,” valuing the best ideas regardless of their origin. Outside of work, Nathan enjoys spending time with family, watching his children’s sports, socializing with friends, and reading.

What is your job title/position at your bank?

Senior Vice President – Iowa Market President.

Where did you attend college/what degree(s) have you obtained?

I attended the University of Iowa and received a Bachelor of Arts (Political Science). I then stayed at the University of Iowa and earned my law degree. Prior to entering banking, I worked for VedderPrice in Chicago as an attorney, specializing in bank mergers, acquisitions and regulatory matters.

When looking back on your banking career, what achievement are you most proud of and why?

Working with an outstanding team of employees, directors and investors in growing and ultimately selling NXT Bank to Heartland Bank and Trust Company.

What piece of advice would you give to your past self or to anyone considering a career in banking?

Get involved in your community. Find what you are passionate about and determine how best to help your local area. That might be on non-profit boards, volunteering, coaching youth sports, etc. Contributing to your community adds value to those around you and allows you to expand your network, resulting in personal satisfaction.

What is your best elevator pitch for why banking is a great career?

Community banking provides the opportunity to establish deep relationships in your community while also allowing you to get to know and understand different types of individuals and businesses. The opportunity to assist clients in achieving their personal, professional and business goals is extremely rewarding.

How does getting involved with the Iowa Bankers Association help you and your bank?

The expertise provided by the Iowa Bankers Association via conferences, webinars and resources on their website is incredibly valuable. The connections you make being involved in Iowa Bankers Association provides the opportunity to discuss banking issues and concerns with talented peers.

When you’re not at work, what do you like to do most?

I enjoy spending time with family, watching our daughters and son participate in sports, socializing with friends and reading.

What is a quote or guiding principle you live by?

The best mousetrap wins. It doesn’t matter who has the idea or what position they hold within the organization; the best idea, thought, or plan that moves the team forward is the winning one.
