McCaulley Embraces Banking Challenges to Benefit Community
Seth McCaulley, president of Community State Bank (CSB), is proud of the community contributions he’s been able to make through banking. In his opinion, giving back to his community is one of the best facets of banking. “There is no better way to connect to your community than a career in banking. Bankers have the ability to help individuals, businesses and governments find strong financial paths forward.”
McCaulley, who is also on the board of directors for CSB, recommends being a sponge and meeting new people. By learning more and meeting new people, bankers can gain new understanding. These new outlooks can provide growth. “The best thing about banking is that every single day is a different challenge, and we should embrace it.”
When looking back on your banking career, what achievement are you most proud of and why?
I am most proud of helping our small business customers achieve their goals. I come from an entrepreneurial family, so I understand the emotions that owners go through. Being able to relate to both sides of the desk has enabled better communication and understanding.
What piece of advice would you give to your past self or to anyone considering a career in banking?
I’d recommend becoming a sponge for learning new things. Meet as many people with different backgrounds from you as possible because they all have a different outlook on the world around us.
What is your best elevator pitch for why banking is a great career?
There is no better way to connect to your community than a career in banking. Bankers have the ability to help individuals, businesses and governments find good financial paths forward. We are able to volunteer our time and resources to help in many different ways. The best thing about banking is that every single day is a different challenge, and we should embrace it.
How does getting involved with the Iowa Bankers Association help you and your bank?
The Iowa Bankers Association has been an outstanding resource for training, compliance, auditing, protecting our industry and connecting with peers. Getting involved in various boards and activities puts you in touch with all of those paths, which are all vital for the industry’s continued success. I remember my first IBA experience was at consumer compliance school, and I was lucky enough to be voted in as an advisory board member. It has been a great journey ever since then!
When you’re not at work, what do you like to do most?
I have too many hobbies to count. To keep this list short, I’ll name the most recent ones of learning how to fly and cruising around with my family in our 1968 Chevy Camaro convertible.
What is a quote or guiding principle you live by?
The guiding principle I try to live by the most is asking myself in all situations, “How can I help?”. It opens some amazing doors.
