IBA Member Spotlight: Sylvia Brown

Continuing Education Helps Brown Succeed in Banking

Sylvia BrownAfter Sylvia Brown earned her associate’s degree at Indian Hills Community College, she started her banking career, working with deposits. She later went back to school, earning her bachelor’s degree in banking and finance online from Buena Vista University. Her desire to further her education hasn’t slowed down, however, as she has attended many courses from the Iowa Bankers Association to enhance her career. “It is a fantastic way to network with other lenders and build relationships in which you feel comfortable reaching out to those fellow bankers and ask questions,” she said.

Today, with 18 years of banking under her belt, Brown is vice president and loan officer at First State Bank in Lynnville. She works with a variety of loans, including consumer, agricultural and commercial, and residential real estate.

When looking back on your banking career, what achievement are you most proud of and why?

I have had an opportunity to build a career working with some of the best mentors, helping my bank team achieve goals of building relationships with people in the communities we serve as well as surrounding communities.

What piece of advice would you give to your past self or to anyone considering a career in banking?

Do not let the fear of being uncomfortable hold you back. Take the classes, ask the questions and get out of that comfort zone. There are so many great opportunities in banking to build a successful career.

What is your best elevator pitch for why banking is a great career?

The relationship that is built between a banker and their clients is so rewarding and such an incredible bond. I am so happy to be walking with my clients on their journey and helping them achieve success.

How does getting involved with Iowa Bankers Association help you and your bank?

I have attended many IBA classes and seminars. I even served on the IBA Ag Bankers Conference Committee. It is a fantastic way to network with other lenders and build relationships in which you feel comfortable reaching out to those fellow bankers and ask questions. With ag lending being my primary focus, I can reach out to others to see how things are looking across the state or what challenges they may be facing.

When you’re not at work, what do you like to do the most?

My husband and I have three kids and farm. When I am not at work, I can often be found helping around the farm or volunteering at my kids’ various activities. I love spending time riding my horses around the farm or attending some local horse shows with my daughter and friends.

What is a quote or guiding principle you live by?

Treat the janitor with the same respect as the CEO.

“Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will succeed.”

— Proverbs 16:3
