Wingert Grows Through the Unknown
Tiffanie Wingert didn’t want to step outside her comfort zone, but four years ago, when a position opened at Shelby County State Bank, she went for it. She ended up being offered the position of staff accountant, which she still holds today. She said, “I cannot imagine doing anything different at the bank, and I am so happy I took the chance. I love what I do and am excited about the future.”
This career change made her realize that stepping out of your comfort zone is important as it allows for more growth. She advises others to try new things and to always be willing to learn more about the paths they may be interested in. This advice also follows Wingert’s belief of trusting in the process. “It is hard to remind myself of this at times, but everything truly happens for a reason even when we don’t understand it,” she added.
When looking back on your banking career, what achievement are you most proud of and why?
About four years ago, a job came open at my bank. It was a job I was never interested in as it was outside of the path I thought I wanted to take and way out of my comfort zone. However, once it was available, I became more interested in the role and the career path it offered. After much consideration, I applied for the job and was offered the role. This is the position I am currently in as staff accountant. I cannot imagine doing anything different at the bank, and I am so happy I took the chance. I love what I do and am excited about the future.
What piece of advice would you give to your past self or to anyone considering a career in banking?
In relation to my answer above, I would tell my past self to not be afraid to get out of your comfort zone. You learn the most outside of your comfort level. I would also advise others to always ask questions about any task you might be interested in learning. Don’t be afraid to learn something new as it could be a new opportunity.
What is your best elevator pitch for why banking is a great career?
Banking is a career that is constantly changing. I love being able to learn and grow daily. I also love being able to help customers with their financial needs.
How does getting involved with the Iowa Bankers Association help you and your bank?
Getting involved with the IBA has opened so many doors for me. I have attended many IBA events over the years. These events have helped me grow as a person, and I have built a network of people to engage with. I’m very grateful for what IBA has done for me and my workplace.
When you’re not at work, what do you like to do most?
When I am not at work, I love spending time with my family and friends. I have a niece and nephew that I try to spend as much time with as I can. When it is football season, you can catch me cheering for the Kansas City Chiefs.
What is a quote or guiding principle you live by?
“Trust the process.” It is hard to remind myself of this at times but everything truly happens for a reason even when we don’t understand it.
