Olsen Advises Bankers to Never Stop Learning

Trever OlsenEven after a little over a decade in lending, Trever Olsen believes there is always room for continued learning. “I would encourage my past self or to anyone considering a career in the banking industry to continue to seek learning opportunities,” he said. “The more you seek these opportunities to learn and grow as a lender, the better you are able to help your clients with their financial goals.”

Olsen started as a part-time teller back in 2011 while attending the University of Iowa. Upon his graduation in 2012, he became a full-time loan officer. Today, he holds the role of vice president, lending officer at First Citizens Bank in Osage.

When looking back on your banking career, what achievement are you most proud of and why?

I would say that I am most proud of the different relationships that I have been able to make over the years. I have truly enjoyed helping people achieve and reach their financial goals.

What piece of advice would you give to your past self or to anyone considering a career in banking?

I would encourage my past self or anyone considering a career in the banking industry to continue to seek learning opportunities, both internally and externally. I have learned that there is always room for continued learning, even after 10 years of lending. The more you seek these opportunities to learn and grow as a lender, the better you can help your clients with their financial goals.

What is your best elevator pitch for why banking is a great career?

There is so much variety with a career in banking and who doesn’t like the hours or the holidays off!

How does getting involved with the Iowa Bankers Association help you and your bank?

The Iowa Bankers Association provides additional resources for bankers and banks to be successful. I have utilized a lot of the IBA’s training courses and have attended several of their conferences. This has helped me learn new skills, gain knowledge from peers and network with other bankers.

When you’re not at work, what do you like to do most?

I enjoy spending time with my family, traveling, watching the Iowa Hawkeyes and working on different house projects. When I have time, I also enjoy golfing, boating or hunting.

What is a quote or guiding principle you live by?

There are no secrets to success. It is the result of preparation, hard work and learning from failure.
